British troops crossing bridge at Antwerp
Here we see two British soldiers preparing to cross a bridge in Antwerp, while to the left a third man provides covering fire with his Bren gun. Antwerp fell to the Allies fairly easily on 4 September 1944, but the Scheldt estuary remained in German hands for much longer, delaying the opening of the port.
