Brussels Civil Guard digging Trenches
This picture shows the Civil Guard of Brussels digging trenches to help defend the city. The Germans later refused to acknowledge the Civil Guard as soldiers, and the Belgian government decided to disarm them to avoid the risk of German atrocities.
