Luftwaffe Pilot climbing into Messerschmitt Bf 109
Picture of a Luftwaffe Pilot climbing into a Messerschmitt Bf 109. Probably taken in 1939, this picture shows a Bf 109, probably an E-1 with four machine guns. Later cannon armed versions of the Bf 109 can be identified by the bulge in the wing required to carry the cannon. The black cat badge identifies this as an aircraft belonging to 2./JG 20
Messerschmitt Bf 109: Pt. 1, John R. Beaman, Jr. This work provides a good technical history of the 109, tracing the development of the fighter from the early prototypes up to the 109E, the model used during the Battle of Britain. [see more]
