Bow of USS Whipple (DD-217) after collision with USS Smith Thompson (DD-212)
Here we see the bow of the Clemson class destroyer USS Whipple (DD-217) after she rammed her sister ship USS Smith Thompson (DD-212) amidships on 14 April 1936. The damage to the Whipple looked dramatic, but was fairly superficial, but the Smith Thompson wasn't worth repairing. Her undamaged bow was given to the Whipple, and she was then scrapped.
