USS Moosehead (IX-98) in 1943
Here we see the former Clemson class destroyer USS Turner (DD-259) in her third incarnation, as the radar and control room training ship USS Moosehead (IX-98). Her second incarnation was as a water tender, with most of her internal fittings removed to make space for water tanks and her deck largely stripped of features. Some of the missing features had to be replaced to turn her into a training ship, but the main changes were internal, where she was given a full Combat Information Centre for use by trainees, along with advanced radar and sonar equipment. This picture was taken in April 1943 when she was carrying a Mark 4 (FD) radar atop midships deckhouse.
