USS Turner (DD-259) as the Water Barge YW-56
Here we see theClemson class destroyer USS Turner (DD-259) in her second incarnation as the self propelled water barge YW-56. In this role just about anything that could be removed from the deck was taken away, leading just the solid deck houses - the base of the bridge, the platform of the amidships deck house and the solid rear deck house. Remarkably the Turner later returned to active service as the advancing training ship Moosehead!
