Steward's Mate 2nd Class Miles Davis King on USS Tulagi (CVE-72)
Here we see Steward's Mate 2nd Class Miles Davis King carrying a loaded 20mm magazine on the Casablanca class escort carrier USS Tulagi (CVE-72), just before the start of Operation Dragoon. At the start of the war the US Navy only allowed African-Americans to work as mess stewards, but that changed under the pressure of war (although in this case King was still officially a mess steward.
