Smoke from fire inside USS Suwannee (CVE-27), 25 October 1944
Here we see smoke billowing from a hole in the flight deck of the Sangamon class escort carrier USS Suwannee (CVE-27) after the bomb carried by a kamikaze aircraft exploded between the flight deck and hanger on 25 October 1944 during the battle of Leyte Gulf. This attack didn't cause too much damage and her flight deck was back in action after two hours, but later in the same day she was hit by a second kamikaze that triggered a massive fire. She had to return to the US for repairs, although she was back in action by March 1945.
