Catholic Mass to honor the dead of Leyte Gulf, USS Suwannee (CVE-27)
Here we see a Catholic mass of thanksgiving and requiem being held on the flight deck of the Sangamon class escort carrier USS Suwannee (CVE-27) to honor those members of the crew who were lost during the battle of Leyte Gulf. She wasn't directly involved in the surface action at Samar, but was hit by a kamikaze aircraft in one of the first recorded successes for the suicide attackers. She suffered 107 dead and 160 wounded during the battle.
