USS Sumner (DD-333) refueling from the Cuyama (AO-3)
Here we see the Clemson Class Destroyer USS Sumner (DD-333) being refueled from the Cuyama (AO-3) at sea, c.1925. This picture was taken only ten years after the US Navy first developed the side-by-side refueling system, which was much more effective than the astern system used by the Royal Navy at first.
