USS Smith (DD-378) and USS Preston (DD-379) under construction
Here we see the Mahan class destroyers USS Smith (DD-378) (left) and USS Preston (DD-379) (right) while under construction at the Mare Island Navy Yard on 1 July 1935. The Smith was at a more advanced stage of construction than the Preston, with more of her decking installed, but both ships were still open above the machinery space. Only the base of the various superstructures have been constructed at this stage.
