USS Saratoga (CV-3) on fire, 21 February 1945
Here we see the fire on the forward flight deck of the Lexington class carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) caused by a series of succesful Japanese air attacks off Iwo Jima on 21 February 1945. Although the fires were eventually put out and the ship repaired, she never returned to active service, and instead became a training carrier, with her role on the front line taken by more modern Essex class carriers.
