Above-front view of USS Porter (DD-356) at Mare Island
Here we see the Porter class destroyer USS Porter (DD-356) from the front while she was at the Mare Island Navy Base on 10 July 1942, towards the end of a period in which she operated along the US West Coast. This picture gives us a good view of her two twin-gun foreward turrets. Although the Porter class carried three more main guns than the previous Farragut class, they were single purpose guns, which made the Porters less useful than the earlier ships with their five dual purpose guns.
