Front view of bridges, USS Pennsylvania (BB-38)

Here we see a frontal view of the bridges on the Pennsylvania class battleship USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) seen at New York on 21 January 1919, in her original configuration. At the base we see the narrow windows of the armoured conning tower. Above that are the angled windows of the navigating bridge. Above that is the flat fronted main bridge, with wing platforms on either side. Above that we can see one of the view finders, and towers with searchlights on top. During the major refit in 1929-31 the bridge area was rebuilt, and although the navigation bridge retained the same basic shape it was enlarged, and the deck above went from rectangular to angled.
