Here we see Lieutenant Commander J. K. Cogswell of the Indiana class battleship USS Oregon (BB-3) signalling 'Your Shots are Falling Short' to another battleship during the battle of Santiago, Cuba, on 3 July 1898. At the time of the battle he was about 50, but his promotion was rapid after this - he was made Commander for his role in the battle, and died ten years later as a Rear Admiral.
