Shaft Alley, USS New Mexico (BB-40)

Shaft Alley, USS New Mexico (BB-40)
Here we see the shaft alley for one of the outboard propeller shafts on the New Mexico class battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40) on 18 June 1919, when the ship was only one year old. The length of the propeller shafts on these battleships isn't often appreciated, and the space needed to carry them through the ship was a potential vulnerability.
