Oil Boilers, USS New Mexico (BB-40)
Here we see three of the nine oil burning boilers on the New Mexico class battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40) the first US battleship to have turbo-electric drive. The steam from these boilers drove turbines that were used to power electrical generators, and the power from them was used to power four electric motors that were directly connected to the propeller shafts. This picture dates to 8 June 1919 when the ship was only one year old.
