Main Electric Motor, USS New Mexico (BB-40)
Here we see one of the main propulsion electric motors and its direct connection to the propeller shaft on the New Mexico class battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40) on 18 June 1919. The New Mexico was the first American battleship to have turbo-electric transmission, which saw the steam from its oil fired boilers power turbines, which were used to drive two main electrical generators. The power from those generators then went to these four massive electric motors, which directly drove the propeller shafts.
