USS Milwaukee (C-21) aground, Humbolt Bay, 17 January 1917
Here we see the St Louis class protected cruiser USS Milwaukee (C-21) ashore in Humbolt Bay on 17 January 1917. She had run aground on 13 January while attempting to help the submarine H-3, which had run aground a month earlier. The crew of the Milwaukee were safely rescued, but the ship couldn't be saved. She broke apart in a storm in 1918 and was sold for scrap in 1919.
