USS Memphis (CL-13) in the South Atlantic, 1941-42
This frontal view of the Omaha class light cruiser USS Memphis (CL-13) in the South Atlantic in 1941-42 gives us a good closeup of several of her key features. In the foreground is the twin 6in turret added to the original design to improve the type's firepower. Above her on a platform is an anti-aircraft gun. Above the muzzle of the gun is one of her rangefinders. At the very top of the picture we see a viewing platform added to the ships between the wars.
US Navy Light Cruisers 1941-45, Mark Stille. Covers the five classes of US Navy light cruisers that saw service during the Second World War, with sections on their design, weaponry, radar, combat experience. Nicely organised, with the wartime service records separated out from the main text, so that the design history of the light cruisers flows nicely. Interesting to see how new roles had to be found for them, after other technology replaced them as reconnaissance aircraft [read full review]
