USS Maine (ACR-1) passing Morro Castle, 1898

Here we see the armoured cruiser USS Maine (ACR-1) passing Morro Castle at the entrance to Havana Harbour on 25 January 1898. On 15 February the Maine was destroyed by an accidental explosion, but the Spanish were blamed by parts of the US press, and the disaster played a part in the outbreak of the Spanish-American war.
