USS Long Island (CVE-1) under construction
Here we see the first American escort carrier USS Long Island (CVE-1) being converted into a carrier from a cargo ship on 1 April 1941. She had been laid down as the C-3 class cargo liner Mormacmail in July 1939, launched on 11 January 1940 and taken over by the Navy on 6 March 1941, so she had been in naval hands for less than a month when this picture was taken. The progress on her flight deck is thus rather impressive!
