Rear gun and depth charges, USS Little (DD-79), 25 October 1918

Here we see the rear gun and depth charges on the Wickes class destroyer USS Little (DD-79), on 25 October 1918. One limit of these early destroyers in anti-submarine work was the very limited number of depth charges that could be carried, far fewer than would be standard in the Second World War.
U.S. Destroyers: An Illustrated Design History, Norman Friedmann . Gives the reader a good understanding of the debates that surrounded each class of destroyer and led to their individual features.
