USS Kearsarge (BB-5) as Crane Ship No.1, Puget Sound, 1936
Here we see the Kearsarge class battleship USS Kearsarge (BB-5) sixteen years after she was converted into a crane ship. From this angle we get a good view of the massive crane, capable of lifting weights of 250 tons, and which was used throughout the Second World War to held construct battleships and aircraft carriers, including two that took her name - USS Hornet (CV-12), which was originally to have been named USS Kearsarge before being renamed after the lost Hornet (CV-8) and USS Kearsarge (CV-33). In order to free her name the battleship Kearsage was renamed as Crane Ship No.1 in 1941.
