USS Indiana (BB-1), Philadelphia Navy Yard, 1910
Here we see Indiana class battleship USS Indiana (BB-1) in the Navy Yard at Philadelphia on 1 April 1910 when she was having a Lacoste ship brake installed. This is the large flap that can be seen on the right of the ship, with the man standing by it giving an idea of its size. The Lacoste ship brake was one of a series of similar mechanisms intended to slow ships rapidly that were developed at about this time, although none became widespread.
