SBD Dauntless and TBM Avenger on USS Independence (CVL-22)
Here we see the Independence class light carrier USS Independence (CVL-22) at sea on 15 July 1943, the day on which her classification was changed from CV to CVL (Light Carrier). On her deck are nine Douglas SBD Dauntless amidships and aft, and nine Grumman TBM Avengers (with the folded wings) amidships and foreward. With all of these aircraft on deck her flightdeck looks terribly small!
