Aerial picture of USS Houston (CL-81), 12 January 1944
This aerial photo shows the Cleveland class light cruiser USS Houston (CL-81) off the Norfolk Navy Yard on 11 January 1944, soon after she was commissioned. The heavy AA armament carried on later cruisers can be seen in the number of circular gun pits. The amount of space taken up by the aircraft hanger, cranes and catapults can also be see at the stern.
US Heavy Cruisers 1941-45: Pre War Classes, Mark Stille. Looks at the 'treaty cruisers' built in the US between the wars, limited by treaty to 10,000 tons and 8in guns. Five classes of treaty cruisers were produced and they played a major role in the fighting during the Second World War, despite the limits imposed on them by the treaty restrictions.
