USS Downes (DD-375) at Mare Island, 1943
Here we see the forward areas of the Mahan class destroyer USS Downes (DD-375) at Mare Island on 30 November 1943, two weeks after she had been recommissioned after suffering very heavy damage at Pearl Harbor. Her nice 'as new' look is rather spoilt by what looks like a massive oil spill just below the bridge structure!
