USS Cincinnati (CL-6) at New York, 22 March 1944
This aerial photo of the Omaha class light cruiser USS Cincinnati (CL-6) was taken at New York on 22 March 1944, at the start of a period where she escorted three convoys across the Atlantic during the build-up to D-Day. This picture shows a number of interesting details. The forward casemate guns can be seen trained in different directions. Just behind the rear funnel one of her scout aircraft can be seen on its catapult (with a second partly hidden by the funnel). Just behind the aircraft is one of her trainable triple torpedo tubes

Covers the five classes of US Navy light cruisers that saw service during the Second World War, with sections on their design, weaponry, radar, combat experience. Nicely organised, with the wartime service records separated out from the main text, so that the design history of the light cruisers flows nicely. Interesting to see how new roles had to be found for them, after other technology replaced them as reconnaissance aircraft [read full review]
