Damage to deck of USS Bunker Hill (CV-17)
Here we see a hole blown into the flight deck of the Essex class carrier USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) by a 500lb bomb dropped by one of two kamikaze aircraft that crashed into her on 11 May 1945. Despite the heavy damage the ship was saved, although she didn't return to action before the end of the war.
