USS Birmingham (CL-62), Mare Island Navy Yard, 21 January 1945
Here we see the Cleveland class light cruiser USS Birmingham (CL-62) at the Mare Island Navy Yard on 21 January 1945, after repairs caused by the explosion of the crippled carrier USS Princeton (CV-23) on 24 October 1944 during the battle of Leyte Gulf. The Birmingham had also needed repairs one year early, so spend the New Years of 1943-44 and 1944-45 at Mare Island.
US Navy Light Cruisers 1941-45, Mark Stille. Covers the five classes of US Navy light cruisers that saw service during the Second World War, with sections on their design, weaponry, radar, combat experience. Nicely organised, with the wartime service records separated out from the main text, so that the design history of the light cruisers flows nicely.
