Survivors from U-744
Here we see some of the survivors from U-744 on a whaler from H class destroyer HMCS Chaudiere about to be taken onboard the River class frigate HMCS St. Catharines. The submarine had been damaged by depth charges from the I class destroyer HMS Icarus and forced to the surface after a long chase. She was boarded and documents were found, but most were lost before they could reach the Allied warships. An attempt to tow the submarine to shore failed, and she was scuttled.
