Here we see a painting of the Formidable class battleship HMS Implacable of 1898, showing her on steam trials from Corfu to Malta on 1 April 1904. As is often the case with paintings of warships in heavy seas the size of the waves compared to the ship are greatly exagerated (at least compared to every photograph I've ever seen of similar scenes), but the amount of spray hitting the ship is much more realistic.
