HMS Implacable (1898) at Anchor

HMS Implacable (1898) at Anchor

Here we see the Formidable class battleship HMS Implacable of 1898 at anchor. These were very powerful ships when built, but were rendered obsolete by the arrival of the all-big gun HMS Dreadnought. On this picture we can see all four calibres of guns carried by the Implacable. The big 12in guns are carried in the turret on the foredeck. Six casemates for 6in guns can be seen amidships, with the front and back pair of guns visible and the middle two guns withdrawn inside the ship. One of the 6-pounder guns can be seen in its casemate just behind the bow. Finally two of the 3-pounder guns can be seen on the fighting platform on the mast just behind the bridge.

Many thanks to Chris Marshall for sending us this picture, which belonged to his mother.
