Brewster F2A Buffalo on USS Long Island (CVE-1)
Here we see two Brewster F2A Buffalo fighters at the very front of the flight deck of USS Long Island (CVE-1) on 8 July 1941, just over a month after she had been commissioned into the US Navy. This view shows the rather simple way in which a rectangular flight deck had simply been built on top of the existing merchant ship hull leaving lots of awkward spaces under the flight deck.
