2nd New Zealand Division and Partisans, Trieste, May 1945
Here we see troops from the 2nd New Zealand Division and some of Tito's partisans sharing cigarettes, probably fairly soon after the New Zealanders reached the city on 2 May. Soon afterwards the relationship between the Allies and the partisans grew increasingly tense, as Tito attempted to seize control of the city and its hinterland.
