The 1st Regiment, King Edward's Horse, was originally formed in 1901 as a cavalry unit for men from the colonies. In 1914 the 2nd Regiment, King Edward's Horse was formed at his own expense by Major John Norton-Griffith, and survived until 1917 when it was disbanded and many of its men joined the expanding Tank Corps.
