Pacific Theatre before Japanese conquests
Map showing the pre-war situation in the Pacific theatre. The islands of the Japanese empire put them in a central location from where they could attack south-west towards the Dutch East Indies and New Guinea and south into the Gilbert and Solomon Islands. The American outposts at Guam and Wake Island were also clearly vulnerable to attack.
