American Civil War: East Tennessee

Map of East Tennesse showing the area of the Knoxville campaign of 1863. The map is an extract from a Map of the Tullahoma Campaign printed in Volume Three of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, first published in the 1880s.

The map show clearly the supply problem that faced Burnside at Knoxville. The only railroad travels from Chattanooga, where it was blocked by Bragg, up the Tennessee Valley to Knoxville and then heads north east into Confederate territory in Virginia. The campaign between Burnside's capture of Knoxville and Longstreet's siege followed the line of the railroad south west of Knoxville.
