War at Sea
SMS Goeben and SMS Breslau emerge from the Dardanelles to attack a weak British squadron at Kephalo. Early in the raid they sink the British monitors Raglan and M 28. They then head for Mudros but at 8.30am the Breslau hits a mine. The Goeben attempts to tow her to safety, but hits a mine. Four more mines detonate around the Breslau and the Germans have to abandon her. The Goeben then ran into another mine at 9.48am, but was still able to get back inside the Dardanelles, where she was attacked by British aircraft and monitors. On 26 January she was towed to safety by the Turkish battleship Turgut Reis.
The German S 13 class destroyer S 16 is sunk by a mine.
