Battle of Verdun

The French attack Fort Douaumont after a five day artillery bombardment.

The final bombardment begins at 6am, when every gun fires at its maximum rate. German observation balloons were shot down at 9am, and the Germans begin a counter bombardment.

The French infantry attack begins at 11.50am and by noon part of the 129th and 74th Regiments have reached the fort. Part of the 129th briefly gets into the fort but is driven out. At the end of the day the French have a machine gun post on top of the fort, but are trapped.

War at Sea

HMS Queen Elizabeth enters dock to have two of her 6in guns replaced with 3in anti-aircraft guns. As a result she misses the battle of Jutland.
