War at Sea

The Canopus class battleship HMS Vengeance becomes flagship of Rear-Admiral E.F.B. Charlton, commander of the British squadron on the east coast of Africa. She remains on overseas duties until 1917, then returns to the UK to act as an Ordnance Depot.

The Arethusa class light cruiser HMS Arethusa hits a mine just off Felixstowe. Six men are killed in the explosion. Attempts to tow her to safety fail and are abandoned in August 1916.
