Start of the second of Ludendorff's great offensives of 1918. The battle starts with an attack by General Quast's Sixth Army south of the River Lys.
Once again the attack achieves dramatic early successes.
The Wickes class destroyer USS Dorsey (DD-117) is launched at William Cramp & Sons of Philadelphia. She entered service just in time for service in the last months of the First World War, but that saw more extensive service as a high speed mine sweeper during the Second World War before being badly damaged in a typhoon off Okinawa just after the end of the war.
The second and third prototypes of the Boulton & Paul P.3 Bobolink are officially cancelled.
