Battle of Loos

After a successful start on 25 September the British attempt to attack the undamaged German second line, advancing across open ground toward intact barbed wire. The result is a massacre, with the 21st and 24th Divisions losing 8,000 dead or wounded from their 15,000 infantry.

War in the Air

Lt. William B. Rhodes Moorhouse, flying an R.A.F. B.E.2b, becomes the first airman to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his role in an attack on Courtrai station on this day. He pressed home his attack despite being mortally wounded. He was able to fly his aircraft back to base but died of wounds on 27 September.
