Germans breach the second and final line of modern defences forts around Antwerp. Only the inner line, built in 1859 and not suitable for modern warfare, now remains.
The Canopus class battleship HMS Glory, flagship of Rear-Admiral R. S. Phipps Hornby, commander of North American Squadron, joins the first Canadian troop convoy across the Atlantic, escorting it until 8 October when she is repalced by HMS Majestic and HMS Princess Royal.
