Men at Arnhem, Geoffrey Powell

Originally published under the pseudonym Tom Angus, but actually written by Geoffrey Powell, a holder of the Military Cross, and a major in the 156 Parachute Battalion of the Parachute Regiment when he took part in the fighting at Arnhem. In the original edition, all names were changed and no units mentioned, but his colleagues soon worked out who the author really was.

This edition included an introduction written by the author, in which he finally admits to being the author, and gives the real names of the men he served with at Arnhem. This is widely considered to be one of the finest accounts of battle from the view of the soldier ever written. Powell was one of the few men to escape from Arnhem, by which time he was commanding the remnants of his regiment.
