Lowestoft Raid

Elements of the German High Seas Fleet bombard Lowestoft and escape before the British Grand Fleet can intervene. Four battlecruisers, six light cruisers and a number of destroyers take part in the main raid while the rest of the German High Seas Fleet remains further off shore. The bombardment only lasts for 10 minutes but it acts a reminder of the vulnerability of the British east coast to raids. In response the Third Battle Squadron is moved to Sheerness.

The British response fails to catch the Germans. It includes the cruisers HMS Penelope and HMS Cleopatra. The cruiser HMS Conquest was badly damaged by 12in shells during the fight.
