The Polikarpov I-19 was developed from the I-17, but would have been powered by a radial engine. The I-17 was designed around an imported Hispano-Suiza inline engine, and was intended to reach a top speed of 500kph/ 310mph. It was tested in 1934, and was followed by a second prototype that reached the target speed during 1935.
At the same time Polikarpov worked on a version of the same aircraft that would be powered by the Gnone-Rhone 14 Krsd two-row radial engine. The new design (the TsKB-25 or I-19) had an estimated top speed of 475kph/ 295mph, and the two-row radial engine would have had more development potential than the single-row radials used in the I-16, but the project never progressed beyond the design stage.
