This is one of the older entries in the Men at Armes series, first published as No. 36 in 1974. It has a slightly different format to more recent entries in the series, starting with a brief history of the war itself, something that is entirely absent from the later volume on the American Army during the war. As ever the text is supported by a good range of colour plates and by a large selection of photographs of suriviving uniforms, badges, buckles and weapons.
There are two problems with this book. First, it does cover a very wide subject area, often not in much detail. However, the pictures are often more valuable than the text anyway in this sort of book, and each section is well illusrated. Rather more seriously, in a book that claims to cover the entire war there is little or nothing on the Native American troops who fought on both sides, and in large numbers for the British.
