The Curtiss XO-18 was the designation given to a single O-1B that was used to test the Curtiss Chieftain engine. The Curtiss H-1640-1 Chieftain was a twelve-cylinder twin-row air-cooled radial engine, a layout that would become common during the Second World War, but that was novel during the 1920s. The Chieftain engine was a failure, suffering from a variety of problems, including overheating in the second row of cylinders. It was soon removed from the XO-18 and the aircraft reverted to its original O-1B configuration.
